For this commission, Kim Beck created a series of flags based on rubbings made of the ground for a 30-foot tall flagpole at Laumeier Sculpture Park in St. Louis. First, she gathered patterns and textures of the site around the flag through the process of rubbing, with the help of Laumeier’s Sarah Harford. After this initial gathering of impressions, she scanned and overlapped the textures to create a series of three double-sided flags that were commercially printed. A one-year temporary installation, Beck’s project directly represents the land below the flagpole, elevating the surface of the ground into the sky. Beck’s hyper-local flags use the color palette of commercial physical printing (cyan, magenta, and yellow) as another parallel for the ground.
