PROVISIONAL

In a continued meditation on the ground Beck’s photographs of potholes and road repairs have been printed, spray painted and woven together. The palette of the paint is taken from the colors used to mark utilities spray-painted on city streets: red, orange, yellow, green, pink, white, purple and blue. This system of color-coded marking indicates the presence of electricity, gas, water, sewer, and surveying. These mysterious tags that look like secret codes are both represented in the photographs and added by Beck through her own paint layered directly on top of the images. The title of this project, “Provisional,” suggests both a landscape that is changing and a body of work that is itself, mutable, variable and in its loose, collage-aesthetic, fluid and impermanent.
